About Declutter USA

We pick up the stuff

you don’t want.

And get it to the people who do.

It’s safe to say that Americans have too much stuff. At the same time, there are struggling small businesses, individuals and non-profits that need the things most have too much of.

Supporting Local Businesses

More than 50% of small businesses go bankrupt within their first year.

Declutter USA partners with small, local businesses in your area and provides them with much-needed inventory. From antiques to vintage clothing, thousands of items go from contractors’ hands to small businesses’ shelves each week.

Supporting You

Research shows that clutter makes you physically and mentally unhealthier.

Let’s be honest. You have too much stuff. And research shows that stuff takes a toll. Decluttering can reduce stress, increase productivity, make you physically healthier and improve sleep. And the best part? We’ll help you declutter for whatever price you can afford.

Supporting the Environment

The average American throws away an average of 81 pounds of clothing a year.

Declutter USA only accepts items in usable condition. This allows us to find a new home for each item we pick up. Items you donate to us will go to people who need them. Perfectly good items shouldn’t be trashed because it’s easier.

Supporting donation centers and nonprofits

25% of items donated to traditional donation centers using traditional methods go straight to landfills.

Declutter USA is a solution to three important problems.

We need proper, effective, ethical infrastructure to deal with used items, so they aren’t discarded.

Declutter USA provides pickups of donated items, because the benefits of decluttering should be accessible to everyone.

Why are there so many people with stuff they don’t want, and so many people without the things they need?

Donation centers and thrift stores across the country are struggling with more inventory than they know what to do with. 25% of clothing sent to donation centers ends up in landfills, while 40-50% is shipped overseas and disrupts foreign economies. Junk removal services trash perfectly good items, and lack transparency about items they claim to be donating to non-profits.

Houses in the US are overburdened with clutter. This creates unnecessary stress and keeps items out of the hands of people who really need them. Decluttering is good for your mental and physical health, and as more Americans realize this, they’re seeking an easier and more ethical way to get rid of their old stuff. Whether you are cleaning out like always, or we’ve inspired you to do so, we would love to help.

While so many Americans have more than they need, there are many Americans that struggle to afford basic necessities. 40% have difficulty with food, housing and healthcare. For millions, stocking their homes with dishes, clothing, furniture, and more is no easy feat. We realized that there had to be a better way to help these people get the physical donations they need.

Hi! I’m Mason. I’m a college student and an entrepreneur, and I founded Declutter USA.

the story of declutter usa

Hi! I’m Mason, the founder and owner of Declutter USA. I am also a full-time college student, and a Montana native. I love thrifting, and, as I learned pretty recently, I also love entrepreneurship.

I started Declutter USA because I noticed an issue in my hometown of Bozeman, Montana. It is almost impossible to donate in Bozeman. With the closure of both Goodwill and Salvation Army in recent years most donation centers are overloaded and overwhelmed, leaving many Bozemanites frustrated, and not wanting to throw away perfectly good items.

DECLUTTER BOZEMAN

Declutter Bozeman (Declutter USA’s original name) was my solution to this obvious problem. Driving past Rethink Thrift one morning (which closes for donations within a few minutes of opening every day) I had the idea. I could offer free pickups of unwanted items and so the hard part (selling and donating the items) myself. It was a business opportunity and a way to do some good in the community I’ve called home for years.

So, I put up some flyers around town and started advertising. Soon, I was completely overwhelmed with the number of requests I was receiving to have donations picked up. With some practice, I developed techniques to best handle the donations, selling and donating them quickly, and picking up more. Organization was key in these early stages.

It’s funny, looking at where I am now, to think that I started by stapling posters to wooden telephone poles. Now, Declutter Bozeman is Declutter USA. It has grown more successful than I could have dreamed. We have reached and passed numerous important checkpoints: registering as an LLC, developing comprehensive lists of vendors, having a gigantic yard sale, hiring independent contractors, creating a website, and now expanding to other parts of the US.

The experience has been invaluable to me. I have had the pleasure of meeting lovely, generous business owners who have been eager to help my small business flourish. I’ve completed hundreds of pickups for numerous clients (all friendly, caring people), and requests keep coming. I’ve learned so much about myself, business, and the world at large, and I am so grateful for the entire experience.

My deepest gratitude goes out to; previous clients, who are kind, generous, and so appreciative of my service; vendors, who have kept my business afloat and honored me with their friendships; and my friends and family, who have done nothing but support me throughout this entrepreneurial journey.

But the journey isn’t over yet! Please, schedule a pick-up on this site today, register to become a vendor, request donations, read through the site, or call or text me just to chat. I am always happy to share my experience and answer any questions you may have.

Once again Bozeman (and wherever is next), thank you.

Mason Scurry
